A birth date is defined by 3 parameters :
Looking closely at a date, we can see within it an astonishing symbol. The history of calendars tells of that at the beginning, the number of the day was related to a lunar month of 28 days, while the year was calculated in relation to a full rotation of the earth around the sun. Even if the imperfection of measures brought slight nuances in calendars of different people, it remained nevertheless, that they were all based on the eternal conjuncture of Moon-Sun, which symbolized water and fire. This is conforming to the book of the Kabbalists, the Sepher Yetzirah, which talks about the 3 Hebrew letters symbolizing air (Aleph), water (Mem) and fire (Shin) : On one side is the positive, on the other the negative, and the verb keeps them in balance. The three fundamental letters mean that Mem is silent like water, that Shin whistles like fire, but that between them is Aleph, a breath of air reconciling them. This suggests that the energies are balanced, as if on a scale. The Water (Moon) and the Fire (Sun) are each on a tray, and Air (Earth) keeps them in equilibrium. The day and the year are maintained in balance by the month (which further explains the necessity for using the European instead of the American way of writing a date). Indeed, what do the 12 months represent if not the almost 10 or 12* lunar months in a solar year! And what does the earth embody, if not the planet and the atmosphere?
. * Originally, the Roman calendar was built on 10 months. Julius Cesar changed the months to 12 to avoid winter to occur in summer, whence the name Julian calendar. Pope Gregory modified this calendar to give us today’s Gregorian calendar. Traces of the initial Roman calendar can be found in the name of the months: September means 7, October means 8, and so on. .
If we respect the tradition that has the 3 energies combining to create another reality that becomes earth, we must add the 3 elements: Water + Air + Fire. It was on this fecund Earth that grew the most beautiful of roses: the Soul,
… which inspired the troubadours of the Middle Ages. She is everyone’s reality !
For the image, we could simplify the parameters of a birth date by these images from the middle Ages, which represent water, air, and fire :
Let us try to grasp the symbolism of these elements in a birth date.
• Date of birth. We know that a date of birth indicates the time when a person comes to earth. Consequently, it can only represent : the innate i.e. what a person brings to life, his basic characteristics !
• The Day
The Moon is sensitive and it is internal. If you look at her in the Tarot cards (no. 18) you will see her attractive
properties through the drops that are pulled toward her.
• The Year The Sun is expressive and external. Looking at it in the Tarot, you will see its repelling principle with the drops moving away from it.
• The Month The Star is the bridge between the two. The moistness and the warmth frame the card, which represents life and its perception. And what manages this perception if not the brain. Hence, the « month » is the « I » of a person, i.e., the intellect that analyzes the sensed perceptions, through the senses. It receives information, thanks to the left brain, which is rational and objective, called active; and the right brain, which is the irrational, intuitive, and passive.
Year : The Sun symbolizes that which a person perceives objectively. Day : The Moon symbolizes that which a person perceives subjectively.
Month : The Star symbolizes the brain which uses this information to elaborate the Idea. How normal for this card to be
the one of inspiration ! In the human being, the left brain helps comprehend his external space... ... the right brain works to understand his inner space. In general, the Moon symbolizes the feminine and character traits considered feminine: passive, intuitive, and receptive... ... and the Sun symbolizes the masculine and character traits considered as masculine: active, deductive, and expressive. The Month becomes the basic element defining a person’s individuality: the I.
• The year is a character trait that is perceived, when a person expresses what he perceives. • The day is character trait that is perceived, when we are able to sense what a person is trying to express. • The month being the intellect, becomes the manner that the brain, which bridges the perception (year) and the sensed (day), can codify the idea to express. Let us summarize the above in a table
